For decades, our client's family cherished their 1948 Tourette teardrop trailer dubbed "Hildegard," but it was time for a transformation. They brought her to us to work our magic, and work it we did - tearing her down to the frame and rebuilding from the ground up. We installed a wider axle and fenders to increase interior space, fabricated a new aluminum body using thicker .050 gauge metal, and reconditioned the iconic side doors and trim. The interior received luxury updates like air conditioning, LED lighting, fresh electricals, birch wood cabinetry, and a clever pull-out cabinet for the owner's camp stove. We even had a custom mattress ensemble sewn for the ultimate camper's retreat. Emerging from our shop surrounded by Airstream kin, Hildegard was reborn as a "Tearstream" - a perfect blend of vintage charm and modern amenities.

About The Project
1948 Tourette Teardrop Trailer
In my line of work, you come across all sorts of vintage treasures - some a little more worn than others. But every now and then, a true gem lands in your lap, the kind that's been lovingly tended to for generations. That's exactly what happened when our North Carolina client entrusted us with their family's 1948 Tourette teardrop trailer, affectionately known as "Hildegard."
Now, Hildegard had been a part of their clan since the swinging '60s, and let me tell you, she'd seen her fair share of adventures. But it was time for this little lady to get a well-deserved makeover, and they knew we were just the crew to make it happen.
The client's wish list was ambitious, to say the least. They wanted us to install a wider axle and add fenders, a modification that would drastically increase Hildegard's interior space. No more cramped quarters or pesky wheel wells - this teardrops was about to spread her wings.
So, we did what any self-respecting trailer whisperers would do: we tore that girl down to her bare bones, stripping her all the way to the frame. With a clean slate, we got to work fabricating a brand-spankin' new body out of heavy-duty .050 aluminum - thicker and tougher than even Airstream's finest. We reincarnated her iconic side doors, reconditioning those period-perfect locks and handles with the utmost care.
But we didn't stop there, oh no. We outfitted Hildegard with all the modern bells and whistles a glamper could desire: air conditioning, LED lighting, a fresh electrical system, and even a snazzy birch wood interior that would make any cabin dweller swoon.
In the kitchen, we went all out, installing a sink with running water, a fridge, and a microwave. But the pièce de résistance? A custom pull-out cabinet, tailor-made to house the owner's beloved camp stove. Talk about luxury camping!
And let's not forget about the creature comforts. We enlisted the talents of seamstress extraordinaire Terri Specking, who handcrafted a sublime mattress ensemble fit for royalty. With her signature touch, Hildegard's cozy nest was complete.
As for the finishing flourishes, we paid homage to her vintage roots with period-correct Marmoleum floors and that iconic teardrop rear hatch door, now lined with warm wood and integrated LED lighting.
Surrounded by her Airstream brethren in our shop, this "Tearstream" emerged from her cocoon, a true vision of vintage perfection melded with modern indulgences. And when our North Carolina client saw the final result, well, let's just say the tears of joy said it all.
So, there you have it, folks - the tale of how we took a beloved family heirloom and transformed it into a camping oasis worthy of the history books. Just call us the trailer transformers, breathing new life into vintage gems, one teardrop at a time.
